Often times I hear complaints from religious people about atheists not knowing or understanding their theology, specifically—their scripture and teachings. This blog will go though the Bible, concentrating on Christian theology. It is my hope that I can teach something to both atheists and Christians about the most popular and bestselling book of all time. I want atheists to have a fundamental knowledge of the scripture that so many, both in my home country of The United States and around the world, believe to be absolute truth. I also desire to show any Christian readers the atheistic interpretation of the Holy Book.
So, what makes me qualified to do such a study? Well, first off, I am an atheist. Secondly, I am very experienced in the non-denominational Christian church. I was raised in a very religious household: attending church twice a week and even going to a Christian high school. Both in school and at home, I was trained in the Bible. My father is the college pastor at his church and reads the Bible, in its entirety, every year (usually finishing in only a couple months). He stressed with my siblings and I the need to know the Bible and learn from it. In the Christian high school, a Bible class was required each year. My freshman year, I took Old Testament Scriptures. My sophomore year, it was New Testament Scriptures. My junior year was Marriage and Family/World Religions. I was asked to leave before my senior year. I have read and studied the Bible as a Christian and, when I became an atheist, I read and studied the Bible again as an atheist. I know the Bible better than most Christians even do.
With that said, I always welcome alternate interpretations (from people of all religious faiths or lack thereof). I also cannot emphasize the fact enough that I want to be corrected if I get something wrong. For the most part, I will move through the Bible as it was written Old Testament - New Testament, Genesis - Revelation. However, I am more than willing to take requests from my audience about what they would like covered.
I am a college student, so I cannot promise how often I will be able to do a new study, but I will do my best. I will answer any and all questions that are asked. I love getting feedback: critiques, complaints, affirmations—I appreciate them all.
I, like Jesus, need at least 12 followers (disciples) in order to keep spreading my message. So, if there does not seem to be much interest in this Bible study, I will simply quit.
So, what do you think?
No matter what your religion is, I think you should go give this blog a quick look. It’s a fascinating educational experience for you on the world’s most popular religion and - even if you are a Christian - will give you a nice perspective on things.
